National Championship Preview

How They Got Here

Villanova entered the NCAA tournament at 30-4 after finishing a game behind fellow #1 seed, Xavier for the regular season title but ripping through the Big East Tournament. Now, they’re a win away from their second title in three years. Villanova has been murdering teams for the past month and now they finally get to play for the National Title on the biggest stage. On average, they’ve beaten their opponents by 17.8 points and that is just a sickening margin. It’s no wonder how well they’ve been playing since they have Hot Jay at the helm. Brunson and Bridges have been great all tournament but we’ve seen the rise of forward, Omari Spellman and guard, Dante DiVincenzo in the last five games. The worst game Nova has played all tournament they still beat Texas Tech by 12 in Boston. We were at that game, teased Nova/Over and the teams decided to shoot 3-19 from three in the first half. Perfect. Needless to say, Villanova has been prepping for this moment all season and now it’s here. They beat UNC on a buzzer beater in 2016, got bounced by Wisco in the Round of 32 in 2017 and now the Wildcats are back and playing their best basketball at the right time.

Michigan went 28-7 through a difficult Big Ten schedule and have obviously won 5 more in the tourney earning themselves a spot in the Final in San Antonio against number 1 seed, Villanova. They won the Big Ten Tournament Championship with huge wins over Michigan St. and number 1 seed Purdue which has fueled their run. The Wolverines have played great basketball but haven’t beaten anyone above a 6 seed because that side of the bracket was an absolute trainwreck. They’ve beaten their opponents by 11.2 points a game and that includes a 27 point thrashing of A&M. They haven’t lost since February 6th and have been possessed since. Moritz Wagner (sounds like he should be in Hoosiers with that name) had 24 points – 15 rebounds against the Cinderella 11 seed, Loyola-Sister Jean and Charles Matthews has averaged 16.6 points in the tournament. Just like Nova, Big Blue is playing their best ball right now which could make for a fun game to watch. The Wolverines have ran the table to the National Championship with great defense and above average scoring, and now it’s time to shut down the best offense in the nation.

M4 Picks

Terrence: Villanova 84-71
Nick: Michigan 77-73
Drew: Villanova 73-61
Chris: Villanova “Whatever gives Nova the spread and the under. 8-0 Nova”

The Spread is 7. Villanova is 5-0 ATS in the Tournament.
Over/Under is 144.5. Tough one with Michigan’s D playing so well but Nova’s offense rolling. Leaning towards the under.

Thoughts (From A Nova Fan)

I’m a pretty realistic sports fan. I know when my teams are the better team, I know when they’re trash and I know when they’re about to win a championship. As a huge Villanova fan, going bonkers when Kris Jenkins hit that game winner against UNC was one of the best sports games I have ever seen. To me, this run for Nova has been absolutely dominant and it doesn’t feel like they can be stopped. Michigan has been really good all year and there is no doubt they belong here but they seem so blah. But they always do so maybe that is to their benefit. Jalen Brunson is a Naismith Candidate, Mikal Bridges could be a lottery pick, and Omari Spellman could declare for the draft after tonight’s game. Michigan has scored 73.9 PPG and given up 62.9, good enough for 8th in the whole country. Villanova has scored 86.8 PPG and give up just over 70. So tonight, being the realistic fan that I am, I think its possible Nova wins by 20. Could be wrong because, naturally, we see the very best from each team in the National Title game but ehhhh..something in my gut, heart and head is telling me Villanova will run them out of the building and Hot Jay Wright will reign supreme again. I can’t wait to win a zillion dollars. #HotJay
